In 1992, Sinéad O’Connor tore up a photo of the Pope on Saturday Night Live. She also changed her setlist and sang the Bob Marley song War, changing the lyrics to mention child abuse. This was an act of protest against failure to speak out against ABUSE and PROTECT children.
These protests of the Catholic Church and its child abuse essentially ended her career and made her a pariah. She had a tragic life. As a teenager, she spent 18 months in a Magdalene asylum (also known as a Magdalene laundry). She’s struggled with mental illness on and off all of her life. She is a victim of abuse in her home. Plus, she did a kick-ass version of a Prince song. Don’t know her because you’re too young? Check her out in the video below.

Survivor, feminist and social justice warrior Sinead O’Conner is the person of the week. Here is a great story about her in the NYT. You can comment on the tory and interact with others on this padlet.
RESEARCH BRIEFS
ADHD and Medication Vacations
Are kids supposed to take a vacation from meds during the summer or not? A recent discussion at the world congress on ADHD debated the relative merits and downfalls of a summer break from methylphenidate for children. Benefits include weight gain and counteracting the effects of drug tolerance. Downfalls include an increase in accidents, negative feedback for ADHD children ( who already have a lot of it), and the possibility that parents will falsely conclude their children don’t need it when they do. These meds do not stunt children’s height. Drug holidays on weekends can rebound side effects. Read more here.
Leading Cause of Death In Moms?
“Death by self-harm through suicide or overdose is a leading cause of death for women in the first year post partum, data indicate. Many of these deaths may be preventable, said Adrienne Griffen, MPP, executive director of theMaternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance.” Shocking. Here is a link

Claiming to be antiracist is not enough. “Passing the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act, transparently releasing the video footage of Andrew Brown’s death in Elizabeth City, and creating uniform policing rules for kids in white and Black neighborhoods are antiracist acts that move the country closer to actually being “not racist. Read more by Justin here ( he is one of our admin’s!) He’s right! They need to show us the body cam. Why can’t they just show us the tapes in the Andrew Brown shooting? Here is another article about it.
Resources I’m Sharing
Here is a link to a great resource I’m sharing. A contract between an adult child and parent. I’ve used it with a young adult who was having trouble with her family when there were no clear guidelines in the home. It helps tremendously. It links to my files. Under One Roof. Quote About Life
Life can be a lot like painting the Golden Gate Bridge.
To finding meaning on the bridge of your life, it’s important to:
Have compassion for yourself when you make mistakes
Pause from time to time and take in the view around you
Make room for discomfort when things get boring, hard, or scary
Hold your thoughts lightly when they are discouraging or unhelpful
Identify the parts of your life that matter most to you, and do your best at those parts
Look toward the work ahead with a sense of direction and perspective
Keep at it, day, after day, after day
